What does a piece that attempts to bid farewell to the world as we know it sound like?
“Adiós, Goodbye, Au Revoir!” is a minimalist-influenced piano work I wrote, born as a reflection on the environmental crisis we are experiencing: a possible, painful farewell to the world we inhabit.
The music explores the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It all begins with a dense, almost misty, soundscape from which an insistent melody emerges on a perpetual motion. As the piece progresses, the harmony, rhythm, and texture shift. Clusters erupt again and again: heavy, obstinate, inevitable.
This piece was recently filmed and recorded by the wonderful Polish pianist Anna Miernik. It has been an honor to work with her and for her to bring this important work to life. You can watch the video below. In addition, here’s the link in case you want to listen to it on Spotify!
